If this is your first appointment at the practice

Before carrying out the scale and polish, the dentist will review your oral health with you and discuss any examinations or investigations you have had previously.

X-rays

If you have not had any recent X-rays, the dentist may recommend taking intraoral X-rays. These provide a reliable way of detecting certain types of tooth decay that may not be visible during a routine clinical examination.

An initial assessment of your oral health

During your first appointment, several examinations will also be carried out to provide an initial assessment of your oral health:

  • examination of your mouth and the surrounding areas;
  • assessment of your jaw joints, although this is limited without a panoramic X-ray;
  • examination of your teeth and dental arches;
  • checking for signs of dental erosion, enamel wear, particularly that associated with teeth grinding, and tooth decay where X-rays have been taken;
  • examination of areas where teeth are missing.

If these initial examinations indicate that further investigation is needed, one or more additional appointments may be recommended.

The scale and polish

When your annual dental check-up, X-rays and scale and polish are all carried out during this first visit, the fee is approximately 35% lower than if the annual check-up and scale and polish were performed at two separate appointments.

You will also still be able to have a reimbursable scale and polish at a later date.

Depending on the amount of tartar present, however, it may not always be possible to complete the scale and polish during this first appointment. A second appointment may therefore be needed to complete the treatment.

The health of your gums

Gingivitis can be identified during your appointment.

However, diagnosing possible periodontitis requires a more detailed examination, including periodontal probing around all the teeth, on both the inner and outer surfaces.

This more detailed examination requires an additional appointment.

The dental practice operates on a non-contracted basis.

Payments can be made by Bancontact or in cash. Credit cards (Visa) are not accepted.
